Previously I gave a list of countries we are passing through. Most of those countries do not require us to pre-arrange visas and will allow us to enter for thirty day as a tourist when presenting at the border.
There are five exceptions to that and the countries are -
China, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
Vietnam like China will not let us travel across the border with our vehicles unless we are accompanied by a guide.
I am using Visa Machine based in UK to obtain the visas for me.

China - the big hurdle overcome.
Crossing China on your own motorcycle until relatively recent was not possible.
Travel restrictions have been eased in China but the authorities still require those travelling with their own vehicles to have a guide. The cost of the guide is not cheap and if travelling solo the cost would be prohibitive.
The beauty of the size of our group we can share the costs between us.
We trawled the internet looking for official Chinese guide companies and found several. We obtained quotes from them and they were almost identical in the amount being asked. Seemed like there was a bit of collusion or the authorities had a set price.
One of the group while reading a travel blog found a recommendation for a Chinese guide used buy the author. We sought a quote from him and he turned out to be the exception and was considerably cheaper than everyone else.
The guide is Wang Lun of Xinjiang Sun Times International Travel Company. The cost per person for a thirty five day journey through China is $1,560 USD
We paid our deposits and Wang now obtains approval for us to transit the country under his guidance. He sends us a Letter of Invitation which we need to obtain a visa. The itinerary he proposes is as follows.
Itinerary, program and information;

It is early days but we have overcome the big hurdle that China seemed to put in our way.
Result of planning - it's going to happen.
During the months of June and July, 2012, I was toying with the idea of riding my Harley Davidson from Australia to UK. I still reckon the Harley Davidson would do the trip if I selected the route carefully but things have moved on. Mind you I do not have experience or seen the roads but based upon what I have read.
My wife, Shirley, was not keen for me to travel alone and she wanted me to find some like minded riders. Travelling solo gives you the independance to do as you please but it also has a downside.
I went to the Horizons Unlimited website and joined up. There I posted a message under the banner of 'Travellers seeking Travellers'. Since posting the message I have had over one hundred conversations with interested riders or riders offering advice and over two thousand readers to my page.
Over the next five months I managed to find seven like minded travellers who are committed to a trip not from Australia but starting in UK and finishing in Australia.
The route will take me from UK, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia? and Australia.
My BMW R1200GS will be shipped to UK to do the trip home.
I fly into London on the 6th April, 2013. I meet up with one of the travellers and head off together.
The group consists of -
Jim - a Welchman
James - another Welchman
Jens - a German
Artur - a Brazilia
Myself - Australian
We are all on motorcycles.
Then we have the following three travelling in four wheeled vehicles.
Jon - Englishman
Vaughan - Englishman
Kimberley - Englishwoman
Joining Horizons Unlimited was certainly worth the effort because it put me in touch with others now in the group.

I am advised that the best time to travel through China is between May and October.
It takes two to three months to organise the official Chinese guide for the journey through China. They require all my personal details and the vehicle details well in advance. Apparently not only are there national authorisations to obtain but also regional. For that reason I will not get the trip done this year.
There are several official 'guide' companies that provide this service. I have contacted several of them and the cost of their services appears to be reasonably uniform. The cost is around the $13,000 mark which covers the guide, the vehicle as well as all the other expenses not including my own hotel accommodation, meals, fuel, etc. The cost can be reduced to about $10,000 if you have your own vehicle that the guide can be seated in.
It is very expensive and out of the reach of most although some European companies charge mega dollars if you join them on one of their tours. They seem to find customers with the money to spend. Their tours are probably worth every cent but not for me.
If you want to go with a large tour company the link below may be of interest to you.
One such tour company
Even $10,000 is a huge cost for a single motorcyclist to pay for travel across one country. That cost would be reasonable if shared between several independent riders. The 'guide' companies I have registered with will try to find another group I can join. We have several months so lets hope it happens or if you want to go and are reading this contact me -

So not this year but next year a big possibility. Need others to join me or join other customers the guides may find.
Keep smiling because it is only a delay - next year it will happen.
