Add another challenge - why not?

Must admit that I once was very judgemental of motorcycle rider's that attached trailers to their bikes.  They were quickly pigeon holed as old farts not knowing how to pack light.  Further more towing a trailer appeared to take the fun out of leaning into corners at speed.

Well now I am one of that maligned group.

It all started when on a ride in Far North Queensland I saw a group of young men pulling trailers.  Now these trailers were not just ordinary trailers.  They were of a bespoke design, purpose built and strongly constructed of metal.  The lads looked as if they had been camping rough for a while and the trailers put to hard work.  Anyone knowing the Australian outback will know how quick vehicles can be destroyed but these trailers had survived.

Unless imbued with welding and steel construction skills, which I am not, making my own was not going to happen.  When searching the web there are some great trailers out there being produced by manufacturers in quantity such as Bandicoot.

As if the challenge of riding a motorcycle from London back to Australia isn't enough I decided to try the journey with a trailer attached.  While surfing the web I found a Design and Fabrication Engineering business run by Alan Young.  The business is called Freewheel UK Ltd.  Alan constructs motorcycle trailers along with just about anything made of metal.  We communicated via email and Alan agreed to construct a trailer for me.  My words to Alan were - it doesn't have to be pretty but it has to strong enough to do the trip back to Australia.

Alan's business is not on any normal tourist route so to collect the bike it would mean me going well out of my way.  He is based in North Walsham - don't know where that is - not surprised.

The decision made and a deposit paid Alan started construction.

Exciting times - the trailer is in my possession.  It looks well built and it's not pretty.  Spent an hour or two with Alan and his staff.  Thanks again lads if you are reading this.

Trailer loaded and ready to go.  There will be a photo. of the trailer attached in another blog post or two.
