Jim Griffith and I travel together for the first part of the trip and we progressively meet up with others of our group along the way.
Jim lives with his wife, Beth, in rural Wales north of the city of Swansea. I had not seen Jim in person as we had only spoken via email and telephone. I thought it important that we meet and discuss and resolve any last minute issues. To that end I drove from Norfolk to Wales and couldn't believe how long it took. While it was only a three hundred odd mile journey the roads and traffic congestion doubled the time the journey would take in Australia.
Jim arranged that I meet him at a Tesco car park close to the M4 motorway.
My first impression? He is a big man at about 190cm with a strong build. He looked very fit and that has since been confirmed as he runs most mornings. With a broad smile and equally broad Welsh accent he welcomed me.
The purpose of meeting him at the Tesco car park soon became evident. He piloted me down a maze of small roads and laneways until we arrived at his home which is situated at the top of a hill overlooking several picturesque valleys. I was made to feel very welcome by both Jim and Beth.
Since arriving in United Kingdom I picked up a head cold. Beth went to work dosing me up on lemon sip hot drinks.
