Turkey and Australia - linked.

Gervis Evi, the hotel where we are staying, is owned by, Ali and Mike, an English couple.  We have not had much of a chance to talk with them but the information passed during our short conversations so far indicates that they 'winter' here and ride home for the English summer.

Mike is a keen bike rider and a balloon pilot.  The hotel is a great place to stay if visiting Goreme.

Everywhere I have been in Turkey I often hear British and Australian accents.  For example the two young Australian guys I met in Istanbul had Turkish parents who immigrated to Australia.  It was their first visit to Turkey.  They both had strong Australian accents and they both had that Australian 'look'.  They overheard me talking to Jim and then made themselves known to me.

Have a great holiday guys.  You have every reason to be proud of your heritage.

Other times when I have heard the accent I have been hesitant in saying something like "Are you Australian?"  I just don't feel right imposing on their time.

Tonight while looking for some place to eat I overheard an Australian accent outside a restaurant.  A guy working at the restaurant had a broad an Australian accent.  He was talking to a customer and a few seconds later a second guy asks us if we would like to see a menu in a slightly less distinct Australian accent.

Must be an omen from above - eat here!  Plus the restaurant was called 'Fat Boys' - definitely us.

Turns out that the owner of the restaurant spent five years in Australia and is married to an Australian woman.  The other guy working in the restaurant is from Brisbane.

Thanks for the meal guys - the photograph of you in the bar didn't turn out - sorry.
